Preparation to Become a Music Therapist

Preparation to Become a Music Therapist

Ever wondered about ways of preparation to become a music therapist? Just like how we know that doing C.N.A work is a way of preparing to be a nurse? Or being a yoga trainer is a way of preparing to be a yoga therapist? But what about preparation to be a music therapist? Any other ways besides just being a school music teacher or a studio music teacher? Good question!
There are other ways of preparing to be a music therapist besides just teaching music in schools or studios. These fields don't require a degree, but they require training and certification:

  1. Therapeutic Music (Music Practitioner)Image result for therapeutic music bedside
Therapeutic Music is similar to music therapy, but the only difference is that therapeutic musicians, or certified music practitioners, perform therapeutic live music at bedsides without requesting the patient to participate. Therapeutic Music focuses on people in hospitals who are ill or dying. Therapeutic musicians, or music practitioners, work one-on-one with patients at bedsides. They provide music for the patient to receive passively, and they create a healing environment for the patients to experience. They often see a patient once.
In order to be a music practitioner, you must receive training and certification through the MHTP (Music for Healing and Transitioning program). How working as a music practitioner helps prepare to be a music therapist is in a way where you can get an idea of helping people in hospitals who are ill to decrease anxiety.

  1. Kirtan/Bhakti Yoga Image result for kirtan yoga
Kirtan is a musical meditation part of Bhakti Yoga, which is a yoga of devotion. Kirtan includes singing chants of Sanskrit names of the Divine. Some Bhakti yoga trainers would include vinyasa yoga practices (fast-paced stretching) before or after kirtan, and others would include hatha yoga practices (slow-paced stretching) before or after kirtan. Either way, its concept is to guide one onto the path of self-realization, have an experience of oneness with everything, and build a connection to the Divine. The instruments used in kirtan are the harmonium (a small, pump organ), guitar, sitar (an Indian lute), tabla (Indian drums), and mridanga (Indian two-sided drums). The chants in kirtan are also call-and-response.
In order to lead kirtan, you must receive Bhakti yoga teacher training. How teaching Bhakti yoga and leading kirtan helps prepare to be a music therapist is in a way where you can get an idea of teaching how to build self-realization (defined by the Western society as an individual's fulfillment of the highest needs). Teaching Bhakti yoga and leading kirtan also helps prepare to be a music therapist in a way where you can get an idea of leading group music therapy sessions and teaching mindfulness.

  1. Therapeutic Drumming Circle Image result for therapeutic drum circle

A therapeutic drumming circle is a restorative circle with a rhythm-based twist, which originated from West Africa. It was developed here in America in 2003. Therapeutic drumming is offered in youth services (especially for the at-risk youth), children's hospitals, alternative schools, substance abuse facilities, mental health services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities, foster care services, prisons, and youth detention centers. The concept of therapeutic drumming is to teach how to cope with problems positively and properly, and support people who are dealing with conflict. It also includes creating rhythms to express emotions.
In order to lead a therapeutic drum circle, you must become a certified therapeutic drum facilitator. How leading therapeutic drum circles help with preparing to become a music therapist is in a way where you can get an idea of leading group music therapy sessions, provide a musical way of coping with problems positively, and teaching how to express emotions properly.

   4. Sound Therapy (Sound Healer)
Related image
Sound therapy is where the sound waves are used to treat physical and mental illness. Sound waves are produced by using pitched percussion instruments, like Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks, gongs, tongue drums, steel drums, kalimbas, chimes, and crystal singing bowls. Sound healers also use unpitched percussion instruments (like tabla drums, congas, bongos, etc.) and their voice along with playing the instruments. What sound therapy and music therapy have in common is providing sensory functions and stress relief. The difference is that sound healing focuses more on treating physical illness, to where the expectations are for the frequencies inside of a human body to function properly.
In order to be a sound healer, you must receive training and certification through Academy of Sound Healing (there's other institutes that offer sound healing certification besides that). How working as a sound healer helps with preparing to become a music therapist is in a way where you can get an idea of using music to create an emotional and physical impact.

Now, I wish there are some sources that talk about jobs that help prepare to become a music therapist besides just teaching music in schools and studios. If there are, surprise me. Plus, I am working on a music degree myself with intentions of being a music therapist, which, I live in a state where the colleges there only have music therapy as a masters degree. On the other hand, for those of you who are interested in becoming a music therapist, I hope this blog is helpful for you.

Being Da Brat

Being "Da Brat" does not mean do bad things. It means to be strong and believe in yourself, just like this rapper on the left. She did not receive that nickname just because she's a "spoiled only child". She got that name because she is optimistic and she believes in herself. Even though the rap nation for females is taken over by Nicki Minaj, it does not stop Da Brat regardless. Rumor has it that she came out of the closet because she dresses manly. Da Brat (2012) argued that "when I dress tomboyish, I don’t really consider it dressing like a guy. I am a full fledge woman and I like to dress however I feel comfortable."
So basically, Da Brat dresses manly only when she performs or whenever she's in the streets.
How Da Brat influenced the important choice I made in the past year is by inspiring me to careless of what others think. We are going to have haters in our lives. Just like what I mentioned in my other blog "Beyonce`: Behind the Diva", Da Brat has many ups and downs, just like life. You just got to stand up and show everyone you are being you and no one else. So be Da Brat!

No Ike y Tina!

No Ike n Tina!

Ike and Tina-type relationships are very tragic. Why? It gets hard to enjoy certain things without your man abusing you. He realizes he’s doing the wrong thing after you leave him, succeed without him, and find another man whose sweet and love-y.
These types of relationships are complicated for us to survive only because we're afraid that if we leave our man, they might kill us. But for the sake of our lives, we have to. Why? Who wants to live under depression? NOBODY! We are trying to prove men wrong by being independent. We are showing them that they need to stop making us feel worthless.
I've had this type of relationship 5 years ago. I broke up with my ex because he was mentally abusive. He makes me feel worthless and he's been wanting to take advantage of me and he thinks sex is the only point of our relationship when it's really not. 5 years passed and he still can't get over me. He's taking advantage of other girls, now, but no matter how many he left behind, he STILL can't get over me. Why? He posted pictures of me on Instagram and said I'm ugly. That is very ironic, but I've been over him. He just couldn't accept the fact that I'm over him.
If you're in an Ike n Tina relationship right now, let me know. I will be glad to help you with these type of relationships.

How I See Myself

How do I view myself in the world today? As of right now, I view myself as a musical person, to whereas, music symbolizes life.
I have ups and downs, just like life and music. There are times when I feel gleeful and there are times when I feel hurt inside. But I am still optimistic and faithful to myself. I know that every cloud has a silver lining. If I did not know that or believe that, and if I am not true to myself, I would have a different name. In other words, my name would not be Faith and I would not be so divadom, but only on the outside. I look at being divadom as inner beauty and not outer beauty.
In the future, I would continue to be faithful to myself and be strong like Laila Ali. How I would help people who are feeling down is through music therapy because music is an easy way that people express themselves. I would also help those who are suffering with cancer by giving them positive messages. I would attend Winston-Salem State University and get a bachelors degree in music and a master’s degree in music therapy. I want to become either a music composer or a music therapist.

The Boy is NOT Mine?

"You need to give it up!/ I had about enough!/ It's not hard to see the boy is mine!" These are the chorus to Brandy and Monica's song, "The Boy is Mine". It's the fact that girls are fighting over guys. Wanna know who starts these fights? GUYS! Why? They think it's entertaining to see girls fight over them! Guys, listen up. It's not okay to date two girls. You may say, "I can get away with this. I'M A MAN!" Guess what? YOU CAN'T! 'Cause you'll be BUSTED!

"So, how do I talk to another girl that my boyfriend's dating without starting a fight?" Well, first off, calm your anger. Next, ask what her name is and introduce yourself. Then ask her about your boyfriend. After she tells you about him, let her know you both are dating the same guy. Now you both have an opportunity to bust him!

Cyberbullying

Psalm 36:1-2
"The trangression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful."

These bible verses are saying that cyberbullies are confident that "not a soul can see or catch them, especially God."

What's the point of bullying thru devices or computers anyway? I mean, seriously, "if you ain't got nothin' nice to say, don't say it at all." This is one of the reasons why half a million teenagers are committing SUICIDE.
People these days think they can get away with cyber bullying, but guess what? THEY CAN'T! 'Cause that situation's gonna get reported one day.
I've experienced being cyber-bullied before. I decided to talk to my ex-friend on Twitter. Then she said, "How did you find me, you stalking a**!" So I blocked her and tweeted, "People these days... trying to start some BS on Twitter. #idontwannabecyberbullied." I've also been cyberbullied by some wanna-be Jennifer Lopez on Google+. Every time I post a beauty tip, she says stuff like "B**ch, shut up!" And I blocked her as well.
If you have been cyberbullied, do me a favor and report their statuses as abuse and block them. I have a bunch of tweets for #idontwannabecyberbullied, so you should find it on Twitter and take advantage of the tips I give about dealing with cyber bulllying.
